About Vermont Open Payroll
Data Source
This dashboard displays salary information for State of Vermont active employees from all branches. Data is sourced from the Vermont Open Data Portal, published by the Department of Human Resources.
What's Included
This tool includes annual salaried employeesonly — those whose salary type is “Annual” in the source data. This represents the vast majority of the state workforce.
What's Excluded
- Temporary employees (~948) — paid on an hourly basis. Because we don't know hours worked, we cannot annualize their compensation for fair comparison.
- General Assembly members (~179) — paid on a weekly basis during the legislative session. Their total annual compensation varies by session length.
- Individuals covered by the Safe at Home Act (Title 15 Sections 1150-1160) are excluded from the source dataset by the State.
Data Fields
- Name — Employee name (Last, First)
- Job Title — Official position title
- Department — State agency or department
- Job Type — Classified or Exempt
- Salary — Annual base salary
Unlike some other states, Vermont's published data does not include overtime, other compensation, fringe benefits, hire dates, or union/bargaining unit information.
Methodology
All statistics (medians, totals, counts) are computed directly from the filtered dataset. Department and position aggregates use the full set of annual salaried employees. The median is the 50th percentile — half of employees earn more, half earn less.
Updates
The source data is published as of the last Friday of each month by the Vermont Department of Human Resources. This dashboard reflects a point-in-time snapshot.
